It is derived from the root jap-, meaning "to utter in a low voice, repeat internally, mutter". Siavists recite the Panchakshara mantra 108 times, chanting upon the 108 rudraksha seed mala. Once a mantra possesses you it is easy to step into the language and recite it 1008 times.
